 Changes at the Iowa Board of Medical Examiners Fee Increase, Online Renewal System and Grace Period The Iowa Board of Medical Examiners has filed notice that it will be raising licensure fees in February. An increase in those going inactive and a decrease in the number of applications and verifications have caused declining revenues. As a result, revenues are not expected to cover costs. The fee increase is necessary for the Board to meet its legal mandate to cover costs. The increase will come when the Board implements the online renewal system n mid-February. A physician will continue to receive a renewal notice in the mail 60 days prior to his/her expiration date explaining that the physician can renew his/her license online or return the renewal notice and request a paper copy of the renewal application. The four page gray renewal application will no longer be sent automatically to everyone. Look for a one-page, renewal notice in the mail. The online renewal system is a secure website that only the physician can access. A physician will be guided through a series of screens to allow for a renewal of his/her license. The online renewal system accepts MasterCard and Visa and once the physician has completed all the required screens the license will automatically be renewed. We hope that this option will be available for all physicians that have an expiration date of May 1, 2002 and all expiration dates following that. The renewal fees will be increasing from $325 to $375 in February 2002. This will affect physicians with a May 1, 2002 expiration date. A $25 discount will be given to all physicians who renew their license through the online renewal system. On July 4, 2001, the Board implemented rules changing the grace period for license renewal from four-months to two-months. Physicians should renew promptly to avoid having the license go inactive.
